It's moving day! - Our experience using professional movers in Korea

Every 2 years we have to make a "stay or move" decision.  For some it's every year, which is even more excruciating. However easier it gets over time, it never gets easier on the bank account.  Usually if you decide to stay, the landlord will ask for a bigger rent(Wolse or jeonse) - and whether you accept or not decides whether you move or not.  It's not a fun game to play (no, it's not a game).

This experience is a year old - when we finally decided to move out of the apt that gave us so much agony (location, neighbors, noise, etc).   We also lended the skills of professional movers to move us a few blocks down the road.

It costs us roughly $1400 to move a whole apartment with 5 or so movers (don't remember the exact head count now).  To require that many people to move a less than 900 sq ft apartment shamed me.  I couldn't believe I had so much stuff!

It is costly to move.  Time consuming to say the least.  How unnecessary things can pile up and take so much effort to move.  I was housing things instead of the two of us!  Oh the lessons.

My own petty lessons aside, I was pleasantly surprised at the job well done with the movers.

To describe the movers is like having a military of professional stunt actors do an action movie in 10 minutes. Nope, not literally though, but at the end of the day, I just felt like I was thrown in a hurricane and left at peace - moved to a new location.

They came in at 8am - emptied the house - loaded the huge truck by noon.  Drove to our new apt down the road.  We paid them for their lunch in cash which was not discussed - and some 30-40 minutes lunch break.  By 3-4pm everything was unloaded and in place.  My dishes were placed nicely by the nice ajumma.  My 30some pots of plants all survived and were handled well.  No damages.  The only iffyness was having to pay for their lunch (50,000won or so) which I didn't know we had to do - but as told by our Korean friend that it's customary to either pay for their lunch or tip them at the end.

The apt was emptied.  Stuff piled into the truck.

Good bye old apt.

Emptied kitchen.

We handled our kitties.  They hid in the closet while the movers came in the new apt for the final placements.

As you can see, my plants were handled well.  The details they took to lessen any damages surpassed our expectation. Every furniture piece was wrapped up in cloth and handled carefully.

Again, I couldn't believe I had so many things...

How did I end up piling all these things.

Never again I said to myself.

They installed our bamboo blinds and curtains.  Pretty much anything to put the apt back together to what it was before was done.

I decided to shelve the shelf myself since I had so many knick knacks I wanted to get rid of.

After they left - we were so relieved to be done with the big move.  It was our very first time hiring professional movers.  The experience was overwhelming to say the least.  They work so fast and hard.  I understand how Korea built their country from nothing from war time to what they are now - by hardwork and sweat.  I really appreciated the many lessons that day.

Had some early dinner after the move.

I reminisced how I started from a suitcase in Korea to having to hire movers to move a whole apt.  I don't want to do that again.

Thankfully, after that ordeal, I haven't bought one single piece of furniture or any big home goods.  We minimized our overall purchase (no bulk buys, emptying the fridge and pantry before buying more food, no new clothes..).  We are still downsizing.  Still ongoing.

I don't know why it had to take that much effort and man power to put me back to my place, but better now than never.

As for the prof movers in Korea - I would recommend them if you want to save effort and time - consider what's important to you.   However, perhaps consider just getting rid of half of your things before moving.  Maybe you'll only need a small truck or two for the job.

I certainly wouldn't want to do it again.  It's not just the cost I want to spare, but the effort and time spent on moving stuff just doesn't seem all that of importance.

On the border to go! (IFC mall Yeouido)

Our first meal for Chuseok was Mexican food!  Sometimes you just crave for something different.  I haven't had Mexican food in a while and it sounded like the perfect treat for simple eaters like us.  This is our fancy meal.

Not knowing whether ifc mall was open for the holiday, we were delighted to learn that they were open as usual!  Thank goodness or we'd be eating rice and kimchi and even I had enough of that simple fare.

The to go bag is brought home to be displayed as a feast.  I took them out of their to go packaging to make it look more authentic.

These plastic to go boxes reminds me of home (US) and it brings a pretty good feeling to start the feast.  We only ordered 3 items on the menu - but it looks as if we ordered 6 things!

I so missed this kind of food!

Such a different fare from Korean food.  And it tastes so good!

Putting the "taco salad" together is a bit of a work.  It came all separated in its own containers. Beef, sauce, salad, fried bowl - separately as not to get soggy.

Our coupons worked despite being expired.  They didn't bother checking the date stamped on it / yay!  5 percent off our total order!

IFC mall is one of our favorite eating places lately - they have some of our fave eats and in conveniently located in Yeouido station.

Happy chuseok!

It's the last day of chuseok.  It's been a pretty warm and unpleasantly air polluted week.

The sky hasn't been all that blue and beautiful for the holiday.  But you gotta keep your spirits up despite the gloomy weather.

Hope everyone is having a great long 5 day weekend.

Is it summer all over again?

I was really dead on wrong.  Fall didn't come to stay.  It came to tickle my deep longing for being able to my hoodies - and behold, the tickle of autumn is gone to declare, it's summer all over again.  It was sweet while it was lasted.

I'm kind of afraid that the weather will turn backwards and betray me.  With all the craziness around these days, I am bracing myself for anything unpredictable.

It's hot, sunny, and humid like the beginning of Summer.  It feels like July.  I know September is that odd month that holds on to the last of summer. But I'm just so done with it by now.

The pollution is back to the nasty zone.  Hovering around 100 for almost a week or so now.  I was getting used to seeing clear weather and beautiful clouds and the sky - I've spoiled myself.

Seeing blue skies and having clear days were amazing.  It's sad that it's become a rarity now.  It wasn't always like this.  Since I've been here, it's just gotten worse over the years.

So treasure those beautiful clear days and breathe em all in!

Grocery price list and favorites - Emart grocery delivery

Gone are the days of going to the grocery store and choosing between this over that one for the freshest piece of fruit or veg, avoiding the crowd and rush hours, and hauling my grocery bags home.

I had another round of grocery delivery from Emart.  I haven't been to a grocery store to buy my food traditionally since Emart app changed my life.  I no longer have to beat the weather, the crowd, and even sales period because Emart consistently releases a 5000won coupon(once a month) for 50,0000won purchase.  That's 10 percent off.  They used to have a 3000won off for 30,000won purchase - but I guess it was too good of a deal.   They also changed it to a minimum of 40,000won order to qualify for free shipping instead of 30,000won minimum.  It was good while it lasted.  Shipping cost is 3000won if under 40k won purchase.

They have a member level ranking(bronze, silver, gold..), which allows you to save more coupon as well as free shipping coupons and a delightful 10% birthday month coupon.  It's all pretty fun really!

This time they had Australian galbi cuts of beef for around 10,000won.  Nicely packed and fresh.

They also had a deal of small cuts of Norwegian mackerel - perfect simmered with soy sauce and sugar.

I got some root vegetables this time.  Lotus root banchan is very easy to make - equal amount of sugar and soy sauce reduced down for less than 30 minutes.  And carrots for anything - fried rice or sauté.  These organic carrots were less than 3000won.

The indulgent moonpie - my favorite brand right now.  This box is less than 5000won.

Instant soups are great!  These are freeze dried soup packs.  You just add hot water and it tastes pretty good for an instant food.  Highly recommend this one for the busy ones.

Now this bread is my newest favorite find.  It's less than 2000won and can compete with the 4000won Paris Baguette breads.  I love the chunks of sunflower seeds in these and it tastes much better than the other rubbery tasting breads sold in grocery stores.

This organic sticky rice (4kg) was only 9900won!  Perfect for that added gloss and suppleness with my multi grain rice.

This egg was less than 4000won and came with 3 eggs extra!  Not bad!  Gotta love those surprises.

And organic mushroom for 2500won.

Overall, I think I got a good deal with my purchase this round.  I got most of them on sale and with a coupon.  I'm happy with finding the beef and fish, too.  I don't have to worry about picking the best one because I've always gotten pretty good picks for vegs, fruit, and meat with Emart delivery.  And if they are bad, you can always call for someone to pick it up for a refund!  I had a case when they sent the wrong item - I called and they came in the next day to pick it up and gave me an instant refund.  Not bad at all.

Now that chuseok is around the corner, prices are going to be volatile (fruit, meat...).  Well it always is up and down here!

I think Emart is onto something really good with their grocery delivery.  I've always been impressed with their logistics and sales.  I wonder when the rest of the market will catch up to Emart.

As much as I am a grannie in tech, I applaud and can't get enough of the convenience of grocery delivery.
